Your Christmas tree gave you so much joy during the holidays.  Now give it a second life and recycle it with Denver’s Treecycle program.  All trees collected through the program will be chipped into mulch and given away to Denver residents in the spring.  Denver residents should set out their Christmas trees for recycling from January 3rd to January 13th.

Remove all decorations and tree stand. Sorry, no artificial or flocked trees. Real Christmas trees only.

Set your tree out for collection during the first two weeks of January.

Dumpster service customers should place their Christmas tree out for recycling on either Tuesday, January 3rd or Monday, January 9th for collection during that week. Do not place trees in dumpsters.  Trees should be placed at least 4 feet away from dumpsters.

Barrel and Manual service customers should place their Christmas tree out for recycling on their normal trash day between January 3rd and 13th.

Watch your tree get picked up for recycling.

From December 26, 2011, through January 17, 2012, residents will be able to take their trees to one of four designated drop-off locations in Fort Collins, plus one in Wellington. The Tree Recycling Program is a free service to the community and is jointly sponsored by the City of Fort Collins and Larimer County.

Trees that are collected weekly from this residential program will be processed into wood mulch suitable for landscaping and gardening projects. Later in the spring, the mulch will be offered to the public for free at the Larimer County Landfill.

It’s extremely important for all lights, string, wire, ornaments, tinsel, fake snow and bags to be removed before taking your tree to any of the drop-off locations; otherwise these decorative materials are ground up and become mixed in the final mulch product, which degrades its value and usefulness. Here’s a listing of all drop-off locations:

• Edora Park, 1420 E. Stuart St. (Tennis court parking lot)

• Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill Rd. (Monday - Saturday, 8a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

• Rolland Moore Park, 2201 S. Shields St. (Parking lot, S.E. corner)

• Streets Facility, 625 Ninth Street (S.W. corner of Vine & Lemay)

• Wellington Recycling Drop-Off Site (corner of 6th Street and Grant Ave.)

For more information on this program and additional reasons for recycling your tree, look for the Spotlight section “Wondering Where to Recycle Your Xmas Tree this Holiday Season?” at fcgov.com/recycling.

The City of Littleton and South Suburban Parks and Recreation will again be collecting and mulching Christmas trees from December 26, 2011 through January 9, 2012. The Littleton collection site is located at Cornerstone Regional Park at the southeast corner of West Belleview Avenue and South Windermere Street. Enter the site from Windermere Street just south of Belleview, with the drop site in the parking lot adjacent to the soccer fields. South Suburban is also collecting trees at their Willow Springs Service Center at 7100 S. Holly Street. Both sites are open everyday during daylight hours.

All lights, ornaments, nails, and plastic bags must be removed, prior to dropping off trees. This drop off site is for Christmas trees only. Please do not drop off flocked trees, artificial trees, washing machines, leaves, branches or other refuse. The trees will be ground into mulch, which will be available free to the public at the site for as long as the supply lasts.

The city’s grounds maintenance division also provides free self-service wood mulch throughout the year for city residents. This mulch is produced by ongoing tree trimming operations. The mulch pile is located on the northwest corner of South Prescott Street and West Prentice Avenue. The site is open to the public during daylight hours and the mulch supply is replenished regularly. Residents are responsible for loading, so bring bags, trash cans and a shovel or pitchfork. There will be a specially designated bin to recycle your wrapping paper. Wrapping paper is considered a contaminant in the single-stream process due to its high clay content and low fiber content, thus requiring that it be kept separate from all other recyclables. Please do not include metallic wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, ornaments, tissue paper, fluorescent or dark paper, or paper covered in tape (these items are not recyclable).

Recycle your old Holiday Lights

You may recycle your old Holiday Lights at the Waste Diversion Center. There will be specially designated containers for your light strands. Please wrap each string of lights into a ball and drop them in the appropriate container.
