Every child deserves an education. In today’s economy more families are struggling to make ends meet and are worried about how they will send their children to school. Jefferson County Head Start is here to help. With educational programming available for children ages 3 to 5, this no-cost program is now enrolling for the 2012 - 2013 school year.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a month committed to raising awareness and preventing child abuse.  In Jefferson County, 8,004 referrals of abuse were reported in 2011, a 5% increase from 2010.  Abused and neglected children are part of the community and it will never be enough to intervene after abuse has occurred.  Increased efforts to prevent abuse and raise awareness for the month of April include several activities which allow Jefferson County residents and employees to become involved.

Three new rides to open at Elitch Gardens

Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park announced today that three new rides will open this summer.  Tube Top, a twisting, twirling, totally-enclosed tube slide is going into Elitch Gardens’ water park while a fresh new look for the theme park’s KiddieLand will feature Rockin’ Tug and Tike Bikes, two new children’s rides. New custom-produced shows, that bring the audience into the act, promise yet another season of exciting entertainment in downtown Denver.  And the best news is - all rides and shows are free with park admission.

McDonald’s offering free breakfast to all Colorado 3rd – 5th graders

 

Colorado McDonald’s restaurants will be giving a FREE breakfast to 3rd - 5th graders before they take their TCAP Assessment Test the morning of March 6th. In an effort to help improve scores, McDonald’s is providing a free Egg McMuffin and milk or Minute Maid orange juice to children 11 and under accompanied by a parent/guardian.

The FREE breakfast is part of a daily allowance of nutrition and energy. The Egg McMuffin and 1% milk jug provides 400 calories, 14.5 fat grams, 26 grams of protein and 0 grams of trans fat. The Egg McMuffin and small Minute Maid orange juice provides 450 calories, 0 fat grams, 20 g of protein and 0 grams of trans fat.

McDonald’s owners, who are community member and parents themselves, know the importance of starting the day with a nutritious breakfast, which many children do not have before they start their school day.

Gov. John Hickenlooper and Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia today announced the state’s plan to help ensure every child in Colorado learns to read. The Colorado Reads: The Early Literacy Initiative report was released as part of the week-long events planned for Colorado Literacy Week, Feb. 27 – March 2.
