Local alpaca owners to participate in National Alpaca Farm Days Sept. 24-25

Make a date to meet an alpaca this weekend! Colorado is home to about 500 alpaca farms and a number of them will be participating in National Alpaca Farm Days Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

“If you’re thinking about raising alpacas or just curious about these friendly, gentle animals that originated in South America, plan to take a trip to a farm near you,” says Denise Haines, president of the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies (ABR). “Being an alpaca owner is a satisfying and rewarding lifestyle, and we hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to experience the animals and learn more about them.”

Some of the owners participating in National Alpaca Farm Days also have farm stores where they sell a variety of unique products made from alpaca fleece. Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest and most luxurious fibers—soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter and stronger than wool. “Farm Days is a great opportunity for knitters and crafters to learn more about the alpaca yarn and fiber and the possibilities for creating a wide variety of products,” Haines adds.

National Alpaca Farm Days, sponsored by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, is free and open to the public. Visit www.nationalalpacafarmdays.com for more information about a participating farm near you.

The public will have another opportunity to see alpacas and alpaca products at ABR’s 15th Annual Fall Festival and Fleece Show to be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6, at The Ranch Complex in Loveland, CO. The event features a halter show, performance events, fiber demonstrations, holiday boutique of alpaca products, yarn spin-off, seminars and more.

Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies (www.alpacabreeders.org) had its beginnings in Colorado in 1994 and in 1996, became a member of the national association, Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association. The purpose of ABR is to support its members through education, marketing events and public awareness.
